How to store a motorcycle

In order to keep your bike in good shape, store it indoors, in a garage or shed. This will prevent the cold and dampness from damaging your bike. But don’t just leave it there. Position your bike away from any windows, as exposure to sunlight may fade the paint.

Things to remember keeping your motorcycle outside

Theft

If your bike is outside, make sure it’s anchored down, check out our best motorcycle locks or check out this FD-MOTO flip-up/down steel ground lock

Scratches

The process of putting on and taking off a cover may leave marks on your paint. Grit blows into the cover with the wind, and there are plastic grommets on the cover. The dirt left on the bike can rub against the cover with the wind. I have not noticed anything serious, but my clear coat could be in better shape.

Seasonal storage

If you deal with winter as I do, find a place to store it and make sure it’s damp free. You can find plenty of products in this article to store your bike.

Wrenching

If you don’t have a garage, you can’t do any maintenance or modifications. You’ll forget a tool and have to run for it and worry that things will be taken when you’re not around. When something takes longer than you expected, you either have to finish in the dark or put a yard sale out for your neighbours. An oil change or chain maintenance cannot be done on a rainy day when you aren’t riding.

Weather

When you get caught in the rain, it’s gonna stay wet. Invest in a good, properly fitting cover—something with ventilation, UV protection, and a reliable way to secure it. Make sure you leave a piece of wood under it. Your bike can settle into the ground if your cover does not have flooring.

Is it OK to keep a motorcycle outside?

Even in the winter, it is possible to leave a motorcycle outside if properly prepared and covered to prevent any water or moisture from getting in. However, you should make sure there isn’t any dampness in the shelter frequently.

Is it OK to leave my motorcycle in the rain?

Your motorcycle will not be damaged by rain. Motorcycles are designed to handle rain. The electrical components and other sensitive equipment are sealed off and protected from the rain. Rain can cause some motorcycle parts to rust and corrode, which can be detrimental to the motorcycle.

Motorcycle Portable Shed Reviews

This portable shelter for a motorcycle is built from quenched UK steel (steel that has been heated and cooled rapidly to strengthen it). It is 80% stronger and 25% lighter compared to galvanised steel. Plus, its lockable design is built into the frame to ensure your motorcycle is secure at night.

Velcro wraps around each of the five main struts of the frame to attach the cover. StormProtector resists winds of 100 mph and stays attached to the motorcycle frame by substantially increasing the area of the cover contacting the frame.

What we like

Build quality: It is 100% waterproof and UV resistant. Made of coated 300D polyester with a PVC coating (stronger, heavier, more robust material used in modern tents and gazebos, designed to withstand the elements).

Pros
  • 1 year guarantee plus 2 years additional warranty if registered.

The inner layer is made up of a polyurethane coating, which has good anti-corrosion properties, protects the vehicle's shape and extends its service life by blocking the erosion of various chemicals.
